Workshop: Artist Legacies – What Are They and What To Do with Them?

Preserving artists’ creative legacies

Mark Waskow, Director of Northern New England Artist Legacy Project—an initiative of Northern New England Museum of Contemporary Art—will lead the discussion and answer your questions. Mark brings 27 years of experience in the visual arts field with roles ranging from collector, curator, museum founder, and artistic executor/trustee. Learn more about Mark’s work at: https://www.nnemoca.org.

If you are a practicing artist or a family member of someone who is, or if you are the executor or trustee for someone who has been creating (or collecting) visual art, the one universal aspect common to everyone is what to do with the surplus of works that are or will be left behind.

The immediate family and friends have selected works and have what they want. What now? Culturally significant artists and their families who are less financially endowed or otherwise left without a thorough way to preserve these works of art leave an uncertain history to represent these cultural contributions.

Without the guidance of adequate cataloging and financial planning, most artworks left posthumously by under-known artists are dropped from the historical record. This workshop will help you to develop a framework to assess your situation and is intended to help you to design a path forward.
