Join us in an online artist discussion, demo, and exhibition tour of “Teetering Between” currently on view at Catamount Arts (St. Johnsbury, VT) curated by AVA’s exhibition manager Sam Eckert. The exhibition features work by Melody Boone, Harrison Halaska, Linda Bryan and Mike Howat. 

Melody S. Boone is a mixed media artist with an interdisciplinary art practice, currently living and working in South Orange, NJ. She received her Bachelor’s of Fine Art in 2003 from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, and her Masters of Fine Art in 2009 from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. Melody has been featured in numerous group exhibitions throughout Hampton Roads, VA, New York, New Jersey.  She has worked with several professional artists, has participated in artist residencies, co-ops, and has received artist fellowships and grants. As her work expands, Melody continues to gain further knowledge about herself and her family history. Through her emersion in black and art history, Melody attempts to use her abstracted narratives and visual cues as a way to dispel notions about race.

Linda Bryan has been infatuated with photography from the moment she first saw an image slowly appearing in the tray of a black and white Photo One class in college. Bryan has earned a BFA in Studio Arts From Northern Vermont University – Johnson and an MFA in Photography from the Academy of Arts University, San Francisco. Bryan has taught digital and darkroom photography at Northern Vermont University – Lyndon, Community College of Vermont, as well as cyanotype workshops through local art centers and at her studio.

Mike Howat is a NH-based painter and educator. His architectural work explores collective memory, urbanization and Americana. He exhibits nationally and has worked with Carrie Secrist Gallery (Chicago), Gallery 263, Nucleus Portland (Portland), Talon Gallery (PDX), Rochester Museum of Fine Arts, Sebastian Foster Gallery (Austin) and others. Howat earned his BFA at New Hampshire in Institute of Art in 2014 and has been actively involved in the regional art scene since. He has taught at AVA Gallery & Art Center in Lebanon, NH since 2020 and was the long-term artist-in-residence at Kimball Jenkins School of Art in Concord, where he also teaches painting and drawing.

Harrison Halaska received his Masters of Fine Arts from the Laguna College of Art and Design in 2018. His focus has been painting still lifes, landscapes, and portraits from life. He is engaged by the uncovering and discovery of his environment through painting. His paintings have been in various exhibitions, including shows at George Billis Gallery, Huntington Library, Laguna Museum of Art, and the 2018 XL Catlin Art Prize exhibition. He has also taught at the California School of the Arts San Gabriel Valley high school for two years.
