AVA Gallery and Art Center is pleased to present the 16th Annual High School Exhibition, works created by regional high school students who have been nominated for participation by their art teachers. The exhibition will be featured in our named galleries: Rebecca Lawrence, Elizabeth Rowland Mayor, E.N. Wennberg, and Clifford B. West, from January 19 – February 10, 2024. A festive award celebration will take place during the opening reception on Friday, January 19, 5-7 PM.

For sixteen years now, AVA has been contacting regional Vermont and New Hampshire public, private, and vocational high schools, encouraging the art faculty to nominate works by students who show exceptional promise in a variety of creative disciplines. Participating high schools include Cardigan Mountain, Hanover High School, Hartford High School, Holderness School, Kimball Union Academy, Lebanon High School, Mascoma Valley Regional High School, Proctor Academy, Rivendell Academy, The Sharon Academy, Stevens High School, Thetford Academy, Windsor High School, and Woodstock Union High School. Nominated students have submitted work in seven categories: Ceramics, Drawing (marker, pen and ink, pencil and colored pencil), Multiple Disciplines (a variety of areas: mixed media, collage, printmaking, graphic design), Painting, Photography, Sculpture, and Wearable Art (jewelry, fiber arts/textile design).

This year’s awards will be chosen by practicing artist Rachel Gross. Rachel Gross is an artist and printmaker living in Hartland, Vermont where she works from a home studio. Rachel received her MFA in printmaking from Tyler School of Art, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is an Artist Member and is on the Board of Directors at Two Rivers Printmaking Studio in White River Junction. She has had solo shows at The Aidron Duckworth Museum, Hooloon Gallery in Philadelphia, Norwich University, and Plymouth State University. Her recent solo exhibition, Titled Planes, was featured in the E.N. Wennberg Gallery at AVA. Her prints are in several major public collections including the Boston Public Library, The Southern Graphics Council Print Collection, the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth, and the Mead Art Museum. Rachel has been an Artist Resident at Yaddo, Northern Print in Newcastle, UK, and the Vermont Studio Center. She has taught printmaking and foundations at the Savannah College of Art and Design, The Center for Cartoon Studies, and Amherst College, and she currently teaches painting and sculpture at Colby-Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire.
