Dominique Gustin | UnNatural Light | Elizabeth Rowland Mayor Gallery | Opening reception: Friday, October 18, 5-7 PM
Artist Talk: Saturday, November 16, 4-5 PM
Dominique Gustin’s artistic practice has evolved alongside technological advances, and while she has embraced these tools, her role as a parent has heightened awareness of their implications. The concept of “screen time” has been a focal point of concern, raising questions about its effects on our well-being, relationships, and awareness of our tangible surroundings. Driven by a growing sense of technology and online content consumption that are altering our lives – causing a collective “untethering” to the physical world and increased inattention to the spaces we inhabit– her work fully exposes and embraces the digital deluge. A multimedia installation, UnNatural Light presents a tableau of projected photographic stills juxtaposed with elements of home and the natural world in an uncluttered, darkened space. Each of the digitally manipulated portraits employs dramatic light and shadow to create heightened visual narratives, inviting the viewer to examine where–and how–their attention is placed in an age increasingly dominated by digital immersion.
