Artist Statement | Jack Morris never leaves the house without his Hasselblad camera. For him, it isn’t just a device for taking pictures; it’s an extension of his vision. It allows him to capture authentic moments of the people and places he encounters, creating a form of storytelling through his lens. Inspired by his environment, his work serves as a creative documentation of these moments that define his identity. Shooting on analog film is a vital part of his process. His careful approach to framing and composition is what makes his photography unique— not just a methodical process but a crucial aspect of his practice, allowing him time to connect with the people, places, and experiences in life. While his work is heavily influenced by his surroundings, it is often driven by his fluctuating emotions and a deep concern for the environmental and political challenges we face today. As a result, his photography not only serves as a medium for creative expression but also aims to shed light on important issues and inspire people to act for positive change.
Biography | Jack Morris is a 22-year-old, self-taught artist and photographer from Stowe, Vermont. Morris’ interest in photography began at a young age, where he frequently used his phone to capture the small details and vast landscapes of Vermont. After a trip to Chile in 2019, he was inspired to pursue photography as a full-time career, and once back in the States, he bought his first real camera, a Sony a7iii. Having very limited prior experience with professional cameras and being even less knowledgeable of photography as an art form, Morris’ journey of learning through trial and error led him to discover his voice as an artist. Today, his passion for documenting the world in true-to-life and abstract perspectives drives his artistic journey further into an unrestricted range of genres and subject matter, allowing for endless opportunity and freedom as a creative. At the age of 16, Morris was diagnosed with a degenerative heart condition. As he had been previously dedicated to becoming a professional athlete, the devastating news called for many lifestyle changes and ultimately uprooted everything he expected his life to be. In the years following his diagnosis, Morris was left feeling uninspired from a lack of true passion and hopelessness as the inevitability of his heart failing at a young age caused constant uncertainty in his life. After realizing his love for photography, the idea of being able to create art regardless of the condition of his health helped Jack rediscover his passion for living. In November of 2022, Morris underwent a life-changing open-heart surgery that alleviated many of the symptoms he had been experiencing on a day-to-day basis for years. Jack Morris is currently exhibiting in two of Vermont’s premier juried art galleries, Frog Hollow Gallery in Burlington, VT, and Artisans Gallery in Waitsfield, VT.
