Christel Wolfaardt

Statement

Coming from Belgium with roots in South Africa, I was always interested in different cultures, myths, identities, and imagery. As a printmaker and digital artist, I layer different culturally important images to ignite new conversations. As a female artist, I am inspired by questions surrounding beauty, identity, power, and the mythology of gender. New technological advances in AI allows me to combine generated single images into digital photomontages. I layer identities, myths, and textures with meaningful esoteric and relevant messages. My process involves a deep understanding of ideas and myths as well as archival prints on etching paper, monotype on archival printed artworks or cyanotype from printed artwork on transparencies.
