Exhibition summary: Each year, AVA presents an exhibition dedicated to mental health awareness, with titles and themes that emphasize hope, connection, and renewal. Our exhibitions often draw inspiration from nature and community—sources of grounding and resilience. Reflecting on the personal networks of friends, family, and chosen kin who sustain us, we arrived at the title Gathering Constellations. The theme is intentionally open-ended, inviting many readings and personal responses. As artists and artworks come together in the gallery, they form an interconnected whole, much like stars arranged into a constellation.
Research suggests that experiences of awe and wonder can positively affect our well-being. Stargazing, in particular, has been shown to reduce stress and foster a sense of calm and perspective. Some scientists refer to this phenomenon as “Skychology,” a term describing the meditative, restorative effects of gazing into a dark, star-filled sky.
Gathering Constellations can be understood in many ways: linking points of light in the night sky; gathering flowers into a vase; noticing them scattered across a field; collecting seashells along the shore; or holding close a sequence of memories that continue to shimmer over time. It may also evoke the presence of loved ones gathered around a table—reminding us that, quite literally, we are all made of stardust.
