Bank Street Gallery | Sue Schiller: New Dimensions

Featured Artist in The Bank Street Gallery at AVA.

Artist Bio

Sue graduated in Fine Arts from Michigan State University and subsequently received a Bachelor of Professional Arts degree in Advertising and Illustration from the Art Center School in Los Angeles, CA.

She worked for several years as an art director in New York ad agencies and for Sesame Street for their various products. Then began working as a printmaker and painter. She won an award, which resulted in a scholarship to the National Academy, where she studied the art of the woodcut and wood engraving. She worked with Vijay Kumar, master printer at the Manhattan Graphics Center, where she had several one-woman shows.

After becoming a Vermont resident, Sue joined the Two Rivers Printing Studio, where she has had several one-woman shows and participated in many group shows. She has shown in many AVA shows and was a featured artist in the Shelburne Art Gallery.

She is part of the permanent collection of the Dartmouth Medical Center, the Upper Valley Music Center, Solan Kettering in NY, and many private collections. Several of the musicians that she has sketched then featured in various etchings also own one of her prints.

Sue enjoys creating prints that are highly embossed and often builds the prints into 3-dimensional constructions.

Artist Statement

Although my printmaking can be either abstract or pictorial, I often like to add a third dimension to build the print. This can be done with extreme embossments or actually building a kind of frieze, all structured with previously printed paper. This adds another element of shadows and multiple points of view. Often, it even allows the viewer to actually see through the print.

But now, I’ve added yet another element to the piece. I’m adding some copper jig-sawed plates that were used to make the prints…and often copper wire to complete it.

Printmaking is often thought of in terms of multiples, but because I so enjoy adding this third dimension, much of my work results in a one-of-a-kind artistic statement.
