The Linda Roesch Visual Arts Gallery | January 9-February 28, 2026
Just what you need to start the new year off, COLOR! The exhibition opens Friday, January 9, with a gallery-wide celebration on Friday, January 16, 5-7 pm.
Exhibition summary | When considering AI-generated artwork, a compelling question arises: how does AI know the colors that make up a sunset? The answer lies not in human perception, but in scientific data. This line of inquiry opens a broader conversation about how color itself is created, understood, and named. Paint manufacturers such as Behr, for example, rely not on algorithms alone but on dedicated teams within their Color and Creative Services departments. These human collaborators draw inspiration from art, fashion, nature, and travel, while also using market research and surveys to inform the naming of colors and shaping seasonal palettes.
The selected artworks in this exhibition boldly demonstrate the expressive power of color across a range of media and styles. Several works draw from expressionism or the legacy of colorists, traditions that emphasize subjective experience over objective representation. Expressionism harnesses vivid, sometimes unnatural hues to provoke emotion and heighten psychological intensity. Colorists, meanwhile, place color at the forefront of their practice, whether through saturated brilliance or through refined, nuanced harmonies.
Together, these works form an exhibition that is both invigorating and uplifting—one that stirs the senses and dispels the lingering weight of winter.
