Biography:

Derek grew up on a horse farm in West Windsor, VT, and first began expressing his imagination through drawing. He was surrounded by a family that loved animals and the land.  Throughout his early childhood, Derek was always interested in art, and was supported by his parents in taking lessons. In his late teens, Derek went through an almost monastic training in art – mostly in drawing and painting.

In 2008, he graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in painting and spent three of his years there as a teaching assistant. Since he graduated, Derek has taught oil painting and printmaking to teens at AVA. Derek lives in Reading, VT and works out of his studio at AVA.

As a painter, Derek prefers landscape, portraiture, and animals, as well as an occasional still life. His work is traditional, but loose like the French Impressionists, who have influenced him. Derek works primarily in oils, watercolor, gouache, and more recently egg tempera. He also does printmaking and some stone and wood carving.
