Recently, we hosted John Stomberg’s exhibition “World Repair: Recent Paintings by John Stomberg." We're thrilled to announce that 16 paintings sold from his collection, and 100% of the sale’s proceeds were generously donated to AVA! Immense thanks to all the collectors who came to support AVA and John's work. AVA Education presents: Art History Talk - Hudson River School. Pippa Drew will discuss the history behind the Hudson River School and how this 19th-century landscape art simultaneously advertised the frontier and laid the groundwork for modern American environmentalism. Join artist and longtime AVA instructor Lia Rothstein for a three-part, hands-on workshop exploring art, sustainability, and biomaterials. Together, participants will create translucent sculptural pieces using a biodegradable material derived from repurposed crustacean shells, then build a collaborative installation in AVA’s Sculpture Garden. Over time, the installation will respond to rain, sun, wind, and changing temperatures before eventually biodegrading and returning to the landscape. The three-part workshop meets September 26, October 3, and October 17 from 1–3 PM. Participation is free, with a suggested donation of $25 per person. AVA invites you to step into the subconscious and let your imagination take over in our upcoming exhibition, "a place visited only in dreams." This exhibition features 33 artists and the imagery that represents the backrooms of their psyche. These surrealists express themselves through mediums including photography, mixed media, painting, woodworking, and more as they produce visuals of alternate realities. "a place visited only in dreams" debuts this Wednesday, September 16. You'll also have a chance to meet the artists featured in this exhibition at our opening reception on Friday, September 25! Save the date! AVA's Annual Dinner & Meeting is coming up on Tuesday, October 20. Members are invited to gather with the AVA Board and staff for an evening to connect, share a meal, reflect on the past year, and look ahead to what's next for AVA and the Upper Valley arts community. A little quiet for your feed. There's something about spending time in the Main Galleries with Converse with the Crossroads of the Wind. The light, the movement, the layers of work, and the ambient sounds of Carla Kimball's nature videos moving through the space. Across painting, installation, printmaking, video, and papercut, six artists explore nature, memory, cycles, loss, resilience, and transformation, each through a distinctly different lens. Thanks for joining us last night, it was a pleasure to listen to Steve Arcone talk about his exhibition, Icescapes in the Abstract, on view through September 12. Photographer Steve Arcone turns his macro lens on the small, overlooked worlds that form and dissolve across the surfaces of New Hampshire ponds during the shoulder seasons — late fall, mid-winter, and early spring. Arcone, who bridges the worlds of science and art, invites viewers not to identify but to look. Many titles draw from classical or jazz compositions, yet he encourages visitors to linger and offer their own interpretations. Thanks to a partnership with the @hyperthermhope, AVA now has four Emergency Overdose boxes across our campus. Each contains Narcan, a nasal spray that can be used to save a life during a suspected opioid overdose. Like an AED or first-aid kit, these boxes are simply another emergency safety resource available to our community when it’s needed. You can find them near the restrooms on each floor of AVA and in the Sculptural Studies Building. We’re grateful to the Hypertherm Hope Foundation for helping us make this important resource accessible on our campus.
