Ledyard National Bank
AVA Gallery and Art Center’s 2017 Juried Summer Exhibition continues to be on display throughout AVA’s downstairs galleries at 11 Bank Street in Lebanon, NH through Friday, August 23.
The works in the exhibit were chosen from 213 entries by 121 artists from 63 communities throughout Vermont and New Hampshire. Of these, 103 works by 81 artists were selected. The juror, John Stomberg, states “When I work as juror for an exhibition, I try to make a show that hangs together. I do not believe in absolute measures of quality, only what strikes me as strong work that will add to a robust exhibition. This is the inherent blessing and curse of asking an individual to be a juror—the process is subjective. It may seem somehow objective because I’m an art professional, but really the selection has to do with a particular temperament (mine in this case) looking at art in a given moment and location. I do take into account many factors that one can point to, such as the complexity of the work compositionally, the competency of the craft involved, and the clarity of the ideas. Ultimately, though, my goal is to make a great show, filled with terrific artworks that hang together in interesting ways and to offer an engaging viewing experience to all who visit AVA in the coming weeks. It is my hope that you will enjoy this special representation of the vibrant and diverse regional art scene as much as I have enjoyed putting it together.”
The Juror’s Recognition Awards were given to Bruce Blanchette of Walpole, NH for his mixed media work Space-Time Artifact; to Helen Shulman of Quechee, VT for her oil painting Three Part Harmony; and to Susan Wilson of Putney, VT for her sculpture Vigil. The three award winners received cash prizes made possible by Ledyard National Bank’s sponsorship of this exhibition. Shawna Gibbs of Claremont, NH received this year’s Cornelia M. Rahmelow Photography Prize for his photograph Movie Night.
The 2017 Juried Summer Exhibition is free and open to the public during gallery hours (Tuesday – Saturday, 11am – 5pm, Thursdays, 11am – 7pm or by appointment.) The exhibition will remain on display through Friday, August 23, 2017.
